Durango, CO – On Thursday, February 18 and Friday, February 19, world-renowned chemist Dr. Richard Zare will visit Fort Lewis College to offer two lectures. The first, called “Human Alcoholysis: How Fast the Action of Alcohol is on the Human Body,” will be held on Thursday at 4:45 p.m. in the FLC Chemistry Hall, Rm. 130. The second will be on Friday at 3:45 p.m., also in Chemistry 130, and is entitled “Fun with H2.” Both presentations are free and open to everyone.

Dr. Zare is the Marguerite Blake Wilbur Professor in Natural Science at Stanford University and a graduate of Harvard University. He has taught at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Columbia University and the University of Colorado.

His specialty is in laser chemistry, and his discoveries in laser induced fluorescence are used by laboratories all over the world. He has worked on over 800 publications and holds more than 50 patents. As a teacher, he has helped hundreds of students in their own academic endeavors, including mentoring Fort Lewis College’s own Colorado Professor of the Year Dr. Ron Estler and FLC Professor Emeritus Dr. Jim Mills. Dr. Zare’s visit is to help commemorate the upcoming retirement of Dr. Estler.
