Dr. Temple Grandin to visit FLC for Common Reading Experience
Durango, CO – The Fort Lewis College Common Reading Experience returns this fall with Thinking in Pictures: My Life with Autism by Dr. Temple Grandin as its selection. Each year FLC chooses a book to be read and discussed across campus, as well as in the community.
The College has a number of events planned around the Common Reading Experience that are free and open to the public. The first will be a lecture called “Answering Your Questions about Autism” on Thursday, September 10 at 7 p.m. in Noble Hall, Rm. 130. The lecture is part of the Life-Long Learning Lecture Series.
The highlight of the Common Reading Experience comes on Wednesday, September 30 when Dr. Grandin visits campus for a free public presentation and book signing. “Helping Different Kinds of Minds Solve Problems” begins at 7 p.m. in Whalen Gym. No tickets are needed for this open admission event, so get there early to get a good seat.

About Dr. Temple Grandin
Dr. Grandin is a renowned animal scientist and autism advocate. She was diagnosed as autistic at the age of two and has spoken of her difficulties with social interactions growing up. This did not hold her back from achieving notable academic and professional success, as she graduated with degrees from Franklin Pierce College, Arizona State University, and a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Her life and work have been recognized many times, including in a 2010 HBO movie. The film earned 15 Emmy Award nominations and won five. The film will be shown in FLC’s Student Union Vallecito Room on October 14 at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.
